It would be really cool to do something about amateur racing. Lemons was one idea I had.
I've also got tons of gopro footage from autocross and rallycross. Maybe I could make a giant supercut about dodging cones? I have no idea how to make movies though. Still, could be fun.
Anyone else going to try and put something together?

I'd really like to do something. I've always been interested in film, but have never put much effort into it beyond shooting some GoPro footage. At first I was thinking of keeping my film efforts local to the area around me (greater Chicago are), but Volvo is sponsoring this after all. Not like the couldn't afford to coordinate between multiple places. haha

Supercut of Oppo members talking about why they each love their car? Like, 45 seconds each or something?

That's actually a pretty good idea. Easy to make, which is a good thing considering the deadline. For next year I'd really like to try to do a LeMons build film.
Have they given the dates for the film festival btw? I know it says it's in November, but doesn't have specific days. I'm just hoping it doesn't coincide with AAPEX/SEMA, since I will be in Vegas for work that whole week.

I've been working on a documentary about the local cruise nights and the charity work that goes on behind them. It's about 2 years in the making, and is a very difficult subject to work on, primarily because of the amount of paperwork I need to have filled out and available whenever I go with my equipment.
Life got in the way a little bit, but over the next year or so, I'm looking to finish it.
Once it's done, I'd love to do something about LeMons or AutoCross, but just for me personally, it would need to have a very specific viewpoint or end goal. Not just people driving around cones, it needs to be part of a bigger picture.
Making a big Oppo documentary could be possible though.
I own all my own equipment for doing this, from shooting to post, so it's all in-house for me.

Is this film festival a thing? I'd like to take part in it.

How about something like this:
Starts off with some action shots and some oppositelock. Have get one of the older members to talk about what oppo is about.
Have members show off their cars in short clips. Driving shots, talking w/ the car in the background, whatever they want. Each person could do their own thing (just like oppo!)
Finish it off with an oppo meetup in Chicago or somewhere to show our camaraderie.

Check out my reply to Chris_K_F. What do you think about something like that?

Possible, but I think it should go deeper. I don't think we should vet Oppos, but I think we should do shorts for more prominent ones. That's not to say we should really pick only certain ones, but some oppos have stories behind their interest that deserve to be told and available. I think we could easily make shorts that follow a similar structure to say Petrolicious, but instead of being about the car, make it about the person, with the car as more of a companion.
There are so many videos about why someone bought the car, or why someone kept the car, but not so many about what made someone like cars in general.
Follow some kind of narrative like "My name is James Grabow, and I drive a 2005 Dodge Magnum RT. Gasoline is in my blood." Talk about growing up around cars, first memories in cars, and what pushed continuing interest. In short, change the focus from the car to the person. Something that car videos really miss sometimes. Some people have amazing stories, and the cars, well, don't (not to say the car isn't important in this, but just not as important).
Catch my drift?

That would be awesome!
I love the idea of ending it with an oppo meetup (sort of bringing things full circle), but is that something we can pull off in a month? The video clips shouldn't be a problem, but getting a meet like that together on such short notice seems like it would be difficult to pull off.

Yeah, that sounds really good. Each person would put their own spin on it. The more prominent oppos (mods I imagine) could be spaced in throughout the piece talking about oppo's history and what it is all about.

I think they said the Volvo submission deadline was like 8/25 for an idea. The meetup could be after that.

Right. That still gives just 11 days to work with Volvo on all of that, which is very short notice IMO.
I will also be in CO labor day weekend for Tour de Fat at the New Belgium brewery... but if we can get enough interest I'm down to try to make this happen.

Should I write up an entry for it, on behalf of Oppo?
![]() 08/05/2014 at 12:03 |

Submissions may take the form of a proof of concept film/video, a screenplay of no more than ten (10) pages, a written treatment, a storyboard, photograph/s, or other materials, and MUST include a written summary of the submission concept.
...
You have until 8/25 to get your idea in so get started.
http://films.jalopnik.com/want-to-make-a…
So it doesn't have to be done, just started/with a write up

You seem to have more experience with things like this, so you could take the lead. I would definitely like to be involved though.
Do you want to share the idea on a new post before submitting it officially?

Just the write up needs to be done for the Volvo sponsorship thing. Assuming that they actually pick the winner on the 8/25 deadline too, that still only gives 11 days to produce the film before the Jalopnik Film Festival deadline of 9/5.

Sure. I recently graduated from Montclair State University with a Bachelors in Television and Digital Media, with a concentration in Production. Projects like this were the bulk of my work (though short projects, the longest being about 8 minutes).
Shoot me an email [my username] @ gmail and we'll keep in contact. I'll put together a proposal and send you a link to what my work looks like currently, and we can go over it together, make changes, and finalize it together. I pitch things like an absolute boss (none of my pitches got rejected in classes) so I'd like to just create the basic outline first, and we can edit it together and see how things would line up. Google Docs is the absolute best way to make it happen, if you have a google account, it would be the best thing, so we can share the document and be able to communicate easily over things to change.
Shoot me an email, and we'll go from there.

Just got clarification from Matt Hardigree, the film will be automatically entered in the JFF and produced over the next couple months. Does not need to be done by the September 5th submission deadline. Let's make this happen!

If you guys don't mind, I'd like to get involved too. I think this idea is great and has a really good shot at winning.
